The organic groups list manager (OG2List) module allows groups of users to have a mailing list managed as part of their organic group, a collection of users with common interests and shared content. Mail on the mailing list is archived in a forum and groups members can respond by email or they can respond in forums directly. Mailing list are one of the most effective and popular methods for group collaboration using the Internet.

Reasons to use Organic Group List Manager

  1. Mail is just content and can be stored in a CMS like Drupal. Mail does need to be stored in a special flat file format by a mailing list manager, because in 2006 databases and servers are fast and inexpensive.
  2. Group members collaborating through your website (Forums and RSS) and through your mailing list are the same people. The membership list of the group should be just one list. User preferences for you mailing list and website should be done in just one place, on the web.
  3. Groups should be able to create mailing lists dynamically without requiring system administrators manual intervention. Also, your web site should not have to have permission to execute command line instructions on your mail server, which is a clear security violation.

OG list manager uses the organic groups and forum module for content and member management. Forums are connected with the OG_forum module and comment and comment mover module are used for managing comments as responses to the mailing list. Access control is managed through the use of categories, or taxonomy to restrict content to group members only. The mailing list require a functioning cron to periodically send email. This implementation requires the ability to install Perl libraries on the server. It does not use a Mailing List Manager, but uses an Mail Transfer Agent such as Postfix and Exim directly.

This module is currently undergoing a lot of tests. It will only be usable to you if you run your own server or have extended admin privileges.
